Citizens & Saints - Join the Triumph (2014) Biography and History
Biography ::
Zach Bolen isn’t interested in debating differences. As the lead singer and songwriter for worship band under the new moniker Citizens & Saints, he hopes his music can do one thing—unite the Church by proclaiming the gospel through song.

“I feel like there’s so much division right now,” he says. “It’s really disheartening. I’m hopeful that that somehow our music can bring some unity. We might have different views, but we’re ultimately citizens. We’re part of the same kingdom.”

It’s a message Zach and his bandmates, Nate Garvey (keys), Nathan Furtado (bass), Spencer Abbott (guitar), Jeremy Kelderman (percussion), Adam Skatula (drums) and Brian Eichelberger (co-writer/producer/keys), have woven into their sophomore release on BEC Recordings. Join the Triumph reminds the local church that they’re part of the big-“C” Church—a victorious body whose sole job is to proclaim God’s Kingdom across the Earth.

The collection of revisited hymns and original songs advances the approach of Citizens’ self-titled debut album, which was released on BEC Recordings and Mars Hill Music in 2013. While Citizens & Saints hit Billboard’s Christian chart at #20 and #6 on its Top Heatseekers chart and received critical acclaim, the biggest signals of success are comments about the songs being cross-generational: “We’ve been hearing stories about kids singing these songs all the way up to grandmas and grandpas joining in,” Zach says.

The Holy Spirit used this realization to expand their viewpoint of music and ministry to be about “the entire church,” not just for specific demographic. “It’s actually for all people who are a part of the body of Christ.”

This lesson in unity is one playing out in the band itself. While Citizens was formed in 2011 when Zach served as the worship leader for Mars Hill U-district campus in Seattle, his departure from his position with the mega-church in 2014 led to a defining moment when the band made a “strong commitment to one another” to continue making music—no matter where they live, work and attend church with their growing families.

“I think that just shows the unity that Jesus brings in the Church. The primary thing for us will always be to serve the local church whether or not Citizens is playing together as a band at a specific church.”

Other differences mark the album. Whereas Citizens reflected the rawness of leading college students in worship in an old church building on Sunday nights, Join the Triumph emerges with skillful signs of maturation. Questions like “Is this melody actually sing-able?” and “Does this theme actually connect with a broad audience or is it so specific that it’s too personal?” were questions the band learned to ask with their first recording and sought to perfect on the second. Sonically Join the Triumph melds musical influences and eras. “It doesn’t bother me at all to say that we’re worship band, but I think that we pull from all kinds of different genres. I really love synth stuff, but I also love the rawness of electric guitars and big drums, so we’re kind of just taking from everything we love.”

This sophomore album brings a new chapter for the band with Zach no longer on staff at Mars Hill and the recent announcement of their new name Citizens & Saints. After releasing their earlier projects, it came to their attention that there was a UK band that was already working under the Citizens name. In a season of change, the band prayerfully changed their name to “Citizens & Saints.”

“Ephesians 2:19, where we got the name Citizens from is a celebration passage. From the beginning it was important as band to have a name that focused more on the people of God participating in joyful and expressive worship of Jesus, then attention being placed on a band, it’s songs or it’s name,” shares Zach. “Moving forward we feel as though “Citizens & Saints,” better exemplifies Ephesians 2:19. It is our goal to be clear in our presentation of the gospel. To put it plainly, the citizens and saints party ain’t over and it will continue long into eternity. We are grateful for the work that God has called us to, and will continue to do, now through “Citizens & Saints.”

At the end of the day, Zach realizes what connects musically with one may not connect with another. But he hopes there’s one thing all followers of Jesus can connect with: the Gospel. “What I love about worship music and what I love about both of these albums is that if we’ve been faithful to communicate what the Word is saying, then at the very least we can agree upon that.”

Jars of Clay - Inlandia The Remix Collection 2014 Biography and History
History ::
“Ar scath a cheile a mhaireas na daoine.”
An old Irish proverb, as translated: “It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.”

It is among our most basic of needs.
... And like the other simple building blocks of life – air, food, water – it can take on many forms. It can be physical or spiritual, close-in or far-flung, untested or time-honored.

For the men that make up the creative force called Jars of Clay, this season has tested their perceptions, challenged their beliefs, underscored their experiences and opened up the possibilities for new definitions of this necessary component.
And now it’s time to share their vision of The Shelter.

“Cast off the robes you’re wearing, set aside the names that you’ve been given…”
Writing songs about community as an aspect of shelter wouldn’t seem like a revolutionary idea. Neither would recruiting talented friends, both long-time and brand new, into your working environment. But for Jars of Clay, long-known as a self-contained creative organism, opening up the doors to let new voices speak into the process wasn’t the easiest decision.

Jars of Clay, historically, has been this kind of compact creative environment; we’re known for doing everything from the songwriting to the producing to the artwork,” says guitarist Matt Odmark. “This was a push in a totally different direction. We brought people in on the songwriting side of things, and we knew in the beginning that we wanted as many voices as possible in the record.

“We wanted to make a record about community, and we wanted the recording process to be community. We wanted it to be an expression of what it was trying to articulate from a concept standpoint,” Odmark continues. “It wasn’t going to work any other way, and it didn’t make sense to us to write a record about community that was just us talking to one another.”

So the call went out to the creative community Jars has long been part of, but hadn’t felt led to truly tap into previously. Songwriters they respect, like Laura Story, Thad Cockrell and Phillip LaRue, injected new lifeblood into songs that had been percolating for more than a year, and long-established, readily recognizable voices, like those of Mac Powell, Amy Grant, Brandon Heath, Leigh Nash, TobyMac and more, lent timbre and texture to this new set of Jars of Clay songs.

And yet, the motivation was there to make them more than just a set of Jars of Clay songs.
“We wanted the songs to sound like a group of people more than ‘there’s Toby, there’s Leigh, there’s Mac,’ so we brought in a choir,” says keyboardist Charlie Lowell. “Steve did a great job of rallying a bunch of independent musicians from around the Nashville area,” including Katie Herzig, Andy and Jill Gullahorn, Sarah Masen Dark, Julie Lee, Trent Dabbs and Kate York.

“I should really be in A&R,” interjects guitarist Stephen Mason.
“He directed the choir, as well, so not only did he get ’em in the room, he told ’em what to do,” Lowell continues. “I should really be a V.P.,” Mason laughingly concludes, to the amusement of his bandmates.

“It’s out of my hands, it was from the start…”
Another of the challenges of trusting this new method of creating was not only asking others into the The Shelter process, but also convincing them to bring their own imprint into the project.

“One of the great parts, too, was to let the artists who weren’t able to physically come into the studio with us, just let them loose where they were,” says vocalist/lyricist Dan Haseltine. “I think a lot of artists create in a very controlled environment, where they’re taking cues from people on what they should be singing and how they should be singing it. We said to them, ‘What we really want is your instinct.’

“It doesn’t speak to the idea of community to tell them ‘sing this exactly like we did on the demo.’ We wanted them to do it how they’d do it, sing it how they’d sing it. If you hear other things that should be in the song, put them on there, then we’ll piece through it and figure it out what’s working with other peoples’ instincts.”

Even if it meant sometimes getting the exact opposite of what was asked for. “One of the ironies – at least I think it’s irony because I’m still confused by Alanis Morissette – was that some of the people we told to let loose would send back exactly what we sent them, and then others we’d tell ‘we need you to sing this exact part’ and they’d send us back something totally different,” Odmark says. “It was an interesting look in the mirror... ‘Oh. So this is what we’re like.’”

“Where you lead us, we will follow…”
What emerges on The Shelter is more of Jars of Clay’s signature sonics, informed by the season of their last project The Long Fall Back To Earth but echoing all the way back to its much-heralded self-titled debut, meshed with an heretofore underexplored inclusiveness of lyric that encourages the listener to join in on the song.

In short, these songs are designed to be sung aloud, with others, within the parameters of that listener’s own shelter.

For some, including the members of Jars of Clay, that will entail bringing them into the church environment proper, something that hadn’t really been a purposeful part of the band’s work before.

“One of the things we’re excited about with this record is to offer, with humility, what we’re excited about within the church,” Mason says. “We’re all big fans of the church. We attend church, so part of the passion we want to get to the people is that, hopefully, this is the language we can use to rejuvenate the way we speak about God in terms of each other.

“What has been, graciously, changing us is this idea that when we look around we see God in other people and in what they’re doing. We are the hands and feet,” Stephen continues. “We’re trying to find new language to describe stuff that we’re all probably in some regards cynical or bored about, because we want to believe there is life in those places.”

“In our weakness let us see, that alone we’ll never be…” Sometimes the hardest part of following the path you think you’re being led down is finding that motivation to keep going. And more often than not, that motivation comes from a place you least expect. Crafting The Shelter project has dominated the work thoughts of the men of Jars of Clay for more than a year, but it was the massive flooding in the Nashville area the first weekend of May 2010 and the subsequent aftermath that brought the idea of both a community in need and needing your community into stark relief.

The band experienced flood-related setbacks both personal and professional. Its recording studio suffered significant damage, as did Dan Haseltine’s home. But it was in that moment when the ephemeral idea of taking shelter within your community became concrete.

“When we were discussing making a record about community and really celebrating that, this story keeps coming up in my mind, because I realize that community can be inconvenience,” Haseltine says. “I’ve experienced that at my own house with people showing up with shovels and gloves and doing work that I couldn’t have done without them.

“A lot of us have experienced that; we’ve seen the character of our community,” Dan continues. “But we need Jesus to remind us sometimes that when we stop, we’re actually part of a great privilege, a privilege to be a community, a privilege to see God’s hand working and moving through us and for us.”

Pull out the roots we’ve dug in so deep, finish what you’ve started…help us to believe…

It’s never easy to change how you do what you do, especially after a decade and a half and a fair amount of success and acclaim. But tapping into new wells of creativity has long been a hallmark of Jars of Clay’s career, and letting go the reins and letting in a trusted community of talented people has generated one of the richest projects in the band’s long history.

It’s simply part of reacting to a change in the culture. “It used to be, when you met somebody new, the first question you asked was ‘So, what do you do?’” Haseltine says. “It’s becoming more and more that first question asked is ‘So, where are you from?’ Which means that we’re becoming a culture where we feel like our identity is more woven into the places where we live rather than the things we do for a living.

“So we hope this project will reflect this shift and reaffirm that as a more important thing, what we’re connected to as a community,” Dan concludes.

It’s a community that Jars of Clay has worked hard to build and engage with, and one that covers, comforts, strengthens, nourishes and emboldens. Like any good shelter should do.

Jessa Anderson - Whole 2014 Biography and History

Biography ::
Hello! I’m Jessa Anderson, a singer/songwriter residing in Nashville, TN with my husband (and resident booking agent/manager/musician extraordinaire) Jordan and our two beautiful, crazy kiddos Lorelei and Jagger. Thanks for stopping by! Maybe you’re here often, and you’ve followed this musical journey of mine from the beginning. Perhaps you’re here after hearing about the music from a friend, or catching a song somewhere. It’s possible you aren’t even sure how you got here, but whoever you are, I’m so glad you made it! It might seem odd that I’m writing this myself, but after a few rounds of bios written by other people (or in the third person, ahem), I’m doing my best to approach this online space in the same way I approach my music―as honestly and openly as possible.

There are many things I am passionate about, and many I enjoy, but I believe there are very few things in life that really, truly matter. First, Jesus Christ. After that, people. From there it all starts to blur into the category of “you can’t take it with you”, so I’m doing my best to invest the majority of my time and effort toward the first two. As for music, and why it matters, I view it as a thread that runs far and wide, bringing people to God and to one another. I have a hard time labeling music in and of itself as “Christian”, but I am proud to be a Christ-follower making music encompassing both the human and the holy.

I was recently asked how things have changed for me with the writing and releasing of Whole, my third full length project. My best answer is this: Whole is the project I’ve always wanted to make. Through this 6-year journey of writing, creating, releasing, and touring, I have pushed myself to be real—to be me. The songs on this record feel so very me, and so very true to life. They are one woman’s perspective to be sure, but sharing that perspective is half the battle. Freely giving of our hearts and minds is what draws us near, what allows us to identify with one another.

I could write volumes about this record and each of it’s individual songs, but in the interest of time, I will just say that life is not easily wrapped up in a beautiful package, or a 3 1/2 minute radio single. Whole encompasses both the shiny, happy moments, and the gory, gut-wrenching ones. My gladness in the gospel of Jesus is expressed through songs like “Everything", "Never the Same", and "Story of Grace". Issues like divorce, dysfunction, and dissatisfaction are woven through “Breakdown", “Stay", and “Idols”. There’s even a love song, “Caught Me By Surprise”, thrown into the mix, co-written with my talented husband (a rare feat for the two of us)! Each of these songs means the world to me, and my hope is that you’ll soon say the same.

Whole released April 8th, 2014. Get your copy HERE.

If you came to this "about section" hoping to learn a little about me, here are a few fun facts:

1. Jordan and I got married on August 14th, 2005. We were 19 and 20, and everyone thought we were siblings. Sometimes we still get asked if we are brother and sister (???).
2. I love coffee. I drink a lot of coffee. I have been a barista twice (once in High School, and during my first years of marriage).
3. My babies are Lorelei (born in August 2010) and Jagger (born in March 2013). They are awesome. Yes, I love Gilmore Girls. We found Jag's name on the internet.
4. I focus heavily on lyrics when I'm songwriting, usually filling in chords as I go along to supplement whatever melody I'm hearing in my head. I play keys, but I'm not a "keys player". I am terrible at music theory.
5. Travel is one of my favorite things about this "job". Jordan and I have been to Quito, Ecuador five times with Extreme Response (we'll make it six in December 2014!). My favorite place music has taken us is Lisbon, Portugal.
6. I hate olives. I HATE olives.
7. I am mostly free spirited and laid back. My natural response is to just "go with the flow", which is pretty much the polar opposite of my dear husband. We have frequent discussions on what actually constitutes being on time vs. late.
8. Once (before we had kids) we had a dog named Lola. She was super adorable, and incidentally, turned out to be the devil. I cried when we gave her away, but I'm pretty sure she made me never want another pet.
9. I grew up in southeastern Michigan. Jordan grew up in Iowa. Our babies were both born in Nashville. We have considered Nashville home for many years, but never quite felt "settled" until we found our church in 2011.
10. We used Kickstarter to fund Whole, and it was a fantastic experience. I’ll forever be grateful for such a generous outpouring of support!

Jesus Culture - Reconstructed Volume 1 (2014) Biography and History
History ::
Jesus Culture is an international Christian revivalist youth outreach ministry based at the Bethel Church of Redding, California. Jesus Culture Ministry hosts conferences and operates a record label, Jesus Culture Music, to share its message and spread worship. Jesus Culture is to move to plant a church in Sacramento, with meetings starting in 2014.

In the summer of 1999, the youth group led by Banning Liebscher at Bethel Church in Redding, California, launched the first Jesus Culture conference. The heart of these gatherings was to serve other churches and lead young people to experience the radical love of God. At each conference there was a strong presence of the Lord, and the youth and young adults were going back to their homes, schools, work places and churches, completely impassioned and transformed.

A few years into hosting conferences at Redding, the Lord began to speak to us about a new breed of revivalists that were emerging throughout the earth to answer the cry of God’s yearning for nations. Our mandate was defined: to raise up, mobilize, equip, encourage, resource, and send these burning ones to fulfill the call of God on their lives, and see entire cities saved, campuses revolutionized, and nations discipled. The Lord revealed they would be marked by four main characteristics:

1. They would be connected with spiritual fathers and mothers and aligned under their covering.
2. They would be passionately in love with Jesus – encountering His extravagant love for them daily.
3. They would give their lives to prayer and know how to win the war in the heavens.
4. They would walk in the supernatural – demonstrating the Kingdom of God through power.

It soon became very clear to us that worship was to be a significant part of our movement. Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala, and Melissa How were worship leaders at our local youth group, and the Lord began to use them to bring an entire generation into whole-hearted worship.

Shortly after God commissioned us to mobilize this new breed of revivalists, we began taking Jesus Culture conferences to different regions, and currently hold them in Redding, Orange County, Dallas/Ft Worth, Chicago, Atlanta, and multiple cities through Australia and England. Also, in response to our mandate, Jesus Culture Music and Campus Awakening have been inspired and birthed out of Jesus Culture.

Jesus Culture Music ::
Jesus Culture Music exists to ignite revival in the nations of the earth. Our heart is to compel the Body of Christ to radically abandon itself to a lifestyle of worship, motivated by a passion to see God receive the glory that is due His name. We long for Jesus to be exalted in the nations and for His manifest presence to invade this world. Although we aspire for people to sing great worship songs, we are primarily committed to see them come into His presence through worship… to encounter His extravagant love and raw power.

Jean Watson - The Place You Have for Me (2013) Biography and History
History ::

Jean Watson grew up in eastern Pennsylvania in a little house that had big windows to the world. She remembers feeling 'different' than other kids her age…preferring to listen to music and play the violin rather than play with dolls. Jean was a thinker and a dreamer. She was fascinated with stories of other lands and cultures and was particularly drawn to the people of Great Britain and Ireland. In 9th grade world history class, she was asked to present a report about a nation, and she chose Ireland as 'her' land. As part of that project, she created a picture collage of Ireland. Little did she know that one day she would carry her childhood artwork to the very land that it depicted!

The road to the land of Jean's dreams was longer and more difficult than she ever would have imagined, however. She surrendered her heart and life to Jesus Christ while attending music school at the University of Cincinnati. Her conversion was radical. She had always believed in God but now she clearly heard His voice asking her to completely lay down her life for the Lord's purposes. She believed that God was telling her that she would one day carry His light to many nations. Jean went on to marry, finish a master's degree in violin performance, and have four children. For years, music took a back seat in Jean's life as her priorities shifted to raising a family. The words God had spoken and the dreams of Ireland and Britain were buried deep and nearly forgotten.

For the next few years, Jean took her passion for the Lord and for learning and invested them into her children. She home schooled the children and taught them to pray, dream big, and to see through her 'big windows to the world'. The family moved several times and finally settled in Michigan in 1999. By that time, however, Jean's marriage was deeply troubled, and all of her energy shifted again…..this time to staying emotionally afloat and seeking God's will for her life. Pain and depression had become a way of life by now, and everyone in the family suffered. The marriage ended in divorce, and Jean and the children faced a huge battle for emotional and financial stability.

It was during this season of deep depression and hopelessness that Jean cried out to the Lord in desperation. She remembers opening the Bible and praying David's simple prayer in psalm 116:4, “Lord, save me!” After praying that prayer, a miraculous chain of events began to unfold. Her landlord accidentally heard Jean singing Christmas carols and was deeply moved by the sound of her voice. He encouraged her to pursue music again and even helped fund the making of Jean's first CD in 2002! At the same time, her son was miraculously delivered of a life-threatening drug addiction, and she began to receive invitations to sing and speak in local churches.

It was as if a prison door had opened, and suddenly what had been used to hold Jean back was suddenly being used for the saving of many lives! (Gen 50:20) All the years of pain, depression, doubt, and struggle had become a road to the fulfillment of Jean's highest calling - taking the love of Christ to the nations through words and music.

Jean went on to record more CD's and by 2006, she had received her first invitation to tour in the land of her one of her childhood dreams - Great Britain. In a short time, she had sung all over England, in Scotland, and finally, in her beloved Ireland. In 2012, she was invited to host a radio show on UCB Ireland Radio which she continues to record from her home in Michigan. She describes her ministry in Ireland and England as 'explosive'.

"On my first trip to England, a girl who was almost completely deaf received her hearing during one of my concerts. People were being touched by God, hearts were being changed, and all I did was show up!"

Since then, Jean's heart's desire has been to to see what she calls 'the sound of heaven' come to as many as possible through her ministry. She insists on excellence in her music and is a seasoned performer; but her passion is not to entertain, but rather to watch God transform lives. As one listener writes, "She does not perform, she shares her heart and her soul…the space around her felt hallowed."

Jean's passion for God is joined with a deep compassion for people. Through her own brokenness, she has a compassion for the hurting which draws people to her. It is not uncommon for a concert to close with people lining up for prayer, which is the heart of Jean’s ministry. It is this love - this childlike belief that even small things can change the world - that drives Jean.

Over the years, what started simply as a music ministry evolved into one in which Jean speaks and teaches as much as she performs. She loves teaching and sharing the love and grace of God that she has so richly experienced in her own life. Jean speaks spontaneously with lots of humor, joy, and always the fervent belief that, "with God all things are possible".

She recently released her 5th CD produced by multiple Dove Award winner, Don Koch. "Don has really helped me grow as a songwriter. He stretches me and has helped me paint my music on much bigger canvasses!" Jean's musical style is eclectic and reflects her love of many musical genres. Her ethereal voice is unique and soothing…a fitting vessel to carry the love of God into dark places.

Jean maintains a full concert schedule in the US, Ireland, and the UK. She has also committed much of her ministry time to "the least of these" by regularly visiting prisons, jails, and homeless shelters. When she is not traveling or recording, Jean enjoys playing violin in the Kalamazoo Symphony, spending time with her children, and riding her horse "Rosie". (and she's STILL living in a little house with big windows to the world.)

Jaron Touhey - Seasons (2014) Biography and History
History ::
Above all else I do all that I do musically out of love and devotion for God and His Word and Gospel. It started from listening to my mom sing in the church choir, listening to my dads classic rock tapes like Petra, White Cross, and Meatloaf, and whooing the ladies with singing boyband music. I got my first guitar from my sisters boyfriend and persued lessons but they never came so I just taught myself. I've been writing my own music for 10 years now and have been in multiple bands throughout that time. I've led worship for the past 7 years and I love it.  Music is a gift and I have no intentions of trying to put my music in a box where it can be classified any specific way. I like to play all sorts of music and you may find that you like some of it. If you get nothing else from my music though, I pray that you find some encouragement and hope from whatever God's given me in lyric and creativity. God bless you all.
