Alisa Turner biography
About Alisa ::
"While other worldviews lead us to sit in the midst of life's joys, foreseeing the coming sorrows, Christianity empowers its people to sit in the midst of this world's sorrows, tasting the coming joy." –Tim Keller, Walking With God Through Pain and Suffering. Worship artist Alisa Turner sings with passion and vulnerability. Her songs capture something almost mystical, yet deeply rooted in the hard stuff of the "now and not yet" grit of the everyday. It's the lilt and innocence in her voice and the heartbreaking, but hopeful truth of her story. That story is inextricably woven throughout her self-titled EP (Integrity Music) in a tapestry of grief, suffering, hope and redemption for which there is only one appropriate response: unfettered, unfiltered worship.

"I've always written songs about what I'm going through," says Alisa, who in her early 20s played coffeehouses and colleges and once drove nine hours and played to what turned out to be a completely empty room. "It all comes from the same place, that 13-year old sitting at the piano in the bonus room, writing 90-second songs, playing her heart out for the joy of it, for the hope of it."

For the joy, for the hope... These are not small concepts for Alisa. These are hard-fought battles, choices made when her faith was just a whimper in a dark corner of the room.

Alisa, a self-proclaimed Daddy's girl who has suffered with debilitating illness since childhood, was only 20 when she lost her father. She had recently left her North Carolina home to pursue a music career in Nashville when she got the call that her worship pastor dad had passed following a massive heart attack. Undone by his death and the ravages of Lyme Disease, Alisa soon returned home as her health worsened. Unable to eat or even hold up her head due to muscle atrophy, she was hospitalized and placed on a feeding tube, remaining bedridden for six years.

After ongoing treatments, her condition eventually improved, freeing her to get back to what she loved – connecting with audiences through music. While out on the road, Alisa met and later married her husband, Jaime. Within a year, the couple were thrilled to discover that they were expecting despite being told that pregnancy wasn't possible due to Alisa's illness.  But their dreams were soon shattered when they learned that their son had a fatal birth defect and would not survive outside the womb. Only 71 minutes after he was born, little London took his last breath in his mom's arms.

After such pain and loss, many would simply crawl back into that dark corner. But not Alisa. Through it all, she returned to the piano, where the Spirit breathed her back to life. "I think the Lord created me this way, drawn in by the emotion that comes with music," she says. "When I sit down at the piano, He always uses it to draw me back, to awaken the dreamer, and I always leave different than when I came. I leave different knowing He sees me, He is with me, He is my hope.”

That hope shines through each track on her EP, especially "My Prayer For You," the project’s first single which was penned by Grammy nominated songwriter and her producer, Michael Farren.

May God give you eyes to see He's still greater / Courage to rise and believe He's able
May God be your peace in the fire you're walking through /
This is my prayer now, this is my prayer for you

This and the other five songs on Alisa Turner, which were co-written by Alisa, explore the depths of what it means to worship among the ashes, comforted by and confident in the presence of God.

Faith-building, songs of overcoming "Lift My Eyes," "Not Even Now," "More Than Gonna Make It," and "As It Is In Heaven" declare God's Kingdom, deliverance, glory and unshakable power. And "Psalm 13," a modern lamentation, conveys the unique timber and emotion of Alisa's life-story, offering the project's benediction.

I will trust your unfailing love / I will rest knowing you're enough /
I will give praise for through all my days you have been good to me

"It's always a bit of a wrestle to merge an individual's story and voice into melodies and anthems that the Church can sing along with," says Farren. "And yet, when you finally land in that authentic place, everyone recognizes and engages with the refrain you've created. Everyone has their story of brokenness, but when they hear from someone who has shared that pain and yet stands and declares the goodness of God, that’s when true worship is loudest...and I pray that's what we've been able to do in telling Alisa's story wrapped in these moments of worship.”

Even now, Alisa struggles daily with her health but her journey has shifted in ways she could never have imagined. "The last few years, my prayer has changed from 'please open these doors' to 'whatever doors you open, I’ll walk through'."

That shift has resulted in growth and opportunities to do what she was created for while bearing witness to the goodness of God. "My life and my story are messy… there are days when all I can do is keep lifting up my hands in desperation and in worship. I know the hard parts of life well and I can see and sense when someone else is going through it. The best way I know to lead is by example. So, I just worship. That's all I know to do."

Michael W. Smith & Friends - The Spirit Of Christmas 2014 Biography and history
Biography ::
Michael Whitaker Smith was born October 7, 1957 to Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia. A sister named Kim would follow. Michael was a typical boy – active in baseball, his family’s church activities, and playing piano. But in not-so-typical fashion, he wrote his first song at age five. At the age of ten, he made a decision to give his life to Christ. He dreamed of playing professional baseball.

Michael attended college at Marshall University in West Virginia but after one semester dropped out to move to Nashville and pursue a career in music. (side note trivia: In 1992 Michael received an honorary Doctorate of Music degree from Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia.)

The years 1979-1981 are best written by Michael himself in his book It’s Time To Be Bold. From chapter 1, we read:

While playing keyboards for the group Higher Ground, I signed my first songwriting contract with Paragon/Benson Publishing Company. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. I was knocking down $200 a week to do something that I loved. Writing songs for a living meant that I didn’t have to wait tables anymore, or work at Coca-Cola, or plant shrubs with a landscaping company.

I thought my life had peaked and God didn’t have to do anything else for me. I wasn’t looking for a record deal, a higher salary, or even a girlfriend – and especially not a wife. Writing music, I was as content as I’d ever been, and I labored at it sixteen hours a day. Then one afternoon while I was working in my office, Deborah Kay Davis walked by.

I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. When she passed by, it was all over for me. I was blown away. Totally head over heels in love. I frantically picked up the phone and called my mother in West Virginia.

"Mom, I can’t believe it. You’re not going to believe this, Mom. I just saw the girl I’m going to marry.

    "What’s her name?"

"I don’t know, Mom. I haven’t met her yet. But I gotta go. I’ll find out and call you back."

My poor mother! She must have thought I’d lost my mind. But I’d never been so clearheaded in my life.

I left my office and went searching for this girl in the warehouse. Sherlock Holmes couldn’t have done a better job of tracking her down, and eventually I found myself standing outside the ladies’ restroom, waiting for her to emerge. She walked out. I introduced myself. We were engaged three and a half weeks later – and married four months after that!

In 1982, Michael was asked to play keyboards in a band that was backing up young artist Amy Grant. He also continued to write songs for himself.

The story goes that Amy’s managers, Mike Blanton and Dan Harrell could not find a Christian record label that would sign Michael or a young New Yorker named Kathy Troccoli. Believing so much in these two young talents, they started Reunion Records.

Michael made his very first record in 1983 and it was called “Michael W. Smith Project.” Michael wrote all the music and wife Debbie wrote the lyrics. The now famous song “Friends” debuted on this album. Michael continued to tour with Amy, now as her opening act.

From there – the records kept coming, and then the books as well:

    1984 – the album “Michael W. Smith 2”
1985 – the video “Michael W. Smith Live in Concert”
1986 – the album “The Big Picture” and Michael’s first book Old Enough to Know
1987 – the album “The Live Set” and the video “The Big Picture Tour”
    1988 – the album “i 2 (EYE)”
    1989 – the album “Christmas”
1990 – the album “Go West Young Man” which saw the song “Place in This World” hit the top 5 in pop charts, and helped earn him American Music Award’s New Artist of the Year.
1992 – the album “Change Your World”
1993 – the album “The First Decade” (a best-of album) as well as a limited edition 2-cd boxed set entitled “The Wonder Years.”
1995 – the album “I’ll Lead You Home”
1997 – the book It’s Time to Be Bold and the book Friends Are Friends Forever
1998 – the album “Live the Life” and the book Your Place In This World and
at Christmas his second Christmas album “Christmastime”
1999 – the album “This Is Your Time,” the book This Is Your Time, as well as
a cookbook with his mom entitled Cooking with Smitty’s Mom and a children’s book co-authored with wife Debbie entitled Where’s Whitney?
    2000 – the album “Freedom”
2001 – the book I Will Be Your Friend and the album “Worship
2002 – the book Worship, the book The Price of Freedom the vhs/dvd “Worship” and the album “Worship Again”
2003 – the CD box set “The Gospels Come to Life” (narration of the four gospels), a DVD “The Bigger Picture” and the album “The Second Decade” with a limited edition DVD
    2004 – album “Healing Rain”
2006 – the movie and soundtrack “The Second Chance
    2006 – the album “Stand”
    2007 – the album “It’s A Wonderful Christmas”
    2008 – the album “A New Hallelujah”
2009 – the live dvd “A New Hallelujah”
    2010 - the album"Wonder"
    2011 - the album "Glory"

In the midst of 22 albums and ten books as well as the awards (Dove awards and Grammy awards among them), Michael and Debbie were blessed with five children: Ryan, Whitney, Tyler, Emily and Anna; and in recent years the family has continued to expand as his children have expanding families of their own.

In 1994, Michael founded a teen club called Rocketown in an effort to provide a place for teens to gather in a safe, loving environment. A warehouse in the Cool Springs area of Brentwood, TN was converted into a dance floor, rooms with pool tables and a coffeehouse. After three years, the club closed. The leadership continued to build a ministry devoted to kids, and a new site in downtown Nashville that reopened in 2003. Visit Rocketown at www.rcktwn.com.

In 1996, Michael founded Rocketown Records with Reunion executive Don Donahue and launched their first artist, Chris Rice. Michael and Don shared a dream to be part of a label where great songs were the focus, where artists, not acts, were developed. They wanted a label that felt like a family. And what a family it is! Go to www.rocketownrecords.com to learn more!

In 1999, a prayer group of Michael and Debbie’s that had been meeting at their farm, had blossomed into what they felt had become a church body. Gathering up some leadership, Michael and Debbie helped start New River Fellowship with close leadership by Pastor and mentor Don Finto, former senior pastor of Nashville’s Belmont Church where Michael and Debbie had attended for many years. Visit New River Fellowship at www.newriverfellowship.com. Throughout his career, Michael has had the opportunity to sing for Presidents and national leaders, and counts among his friends the Reverend Billy Graham and his son, Franklin Graham. He is active in Billy Graham Crusades as well as The Samaritan’s Purse, the ministry headed by Franklin Graham.

But for all of Michael’s accolades, for his involvement in his teen outreach Rocketown, leadership in his local church body, the business of being an artist, an author and a record label executive, Michael sums up his life as this, “to be remembered as a God-fearing man who loved his wife and kids well.

Mikeschair - All Or Nothing 2014 Biography and History
Biography ::
There is something so sweet about surrender yet at the same time, there’s something a little intimidating about commitment and it’s that spot in the middle where believers sometimes get mired. Giving our all to God can be a challenge, yet MIKESCHAIR frontman Mike Grayson knows the rewards and with the band’s latest Curb Records album, All or Nothing, he’s inviting others to take the plunge.

“It’s human nature to pick and choose the verses that we like out of the Bible and we push aside the ones that are a little harder to hear,” Grayson says. “The fact is the Lord doesn’t want a lukewarm believer. The title song on our new album is obviously about the fact that we want to be on the ALL side.”

“All or Nothing” was the first song Grayson penned for the group’s third studio album, and it immediately became a creative anchor. “As I continued to write, the word ‘all’ just kept coming up,” Grayson relates. “Throughout the span of the whole project, the goal is to inspire people to be sold out, to be on fire for God, to choose the ‘all’ side of the phrase ‘all or nothing.’ There are at least three songs that have ‘all’ in the title, so it’s very much centered around that word. It’s the first time where I actually wrote a song and then followed a theme throughout the whole process of writing the record.”

Just what made the theme of total commitment resonate so strongly with Grayon? “We’ve been doing this almost 10 years now, which is crazy,” he says shaking his head at how quickly time has passed. “I feel like this is a season of challenging our fans to really take that step with us and say ‘Hey! This is it! I’ve made a choice and I want to see it through.’”

For Grayson, the initial choice to serve God with his musical gifts came while he was a student at Nashville’s Belmont University. The Orlando native made friends with a few other aspiring musicians and began spending time writing songs and developing a unique sound. They submitted a demo for Belmont’s Christian Music Showcase and scored a coveted performance slot that was so well received it boosted their confidence and ultimately helped pave the way for a deal with Curb Records.
The band’s self-titled debut album instantly earned them a devoted following with such memorable singles as “Let the Waters Rise” and “Can’t Take Away. Their penchant for combining meaty lyrics with engaging melodies helped garner four Dove Award nominations in 2010, including song of the year for “Let the Waters Rise” and rock contemporary song for “Can’t Take Away.”

MIKESCHAIR continued the momentum with their sophomore collection A Beautiful Life. The album solidified Grayson’s reputation as one of the industry’s most compelling young vocalists and a songwriter of considerable depth and insight. Their second album spawned the powerful hit “Someone Worth Dying For” which became yet another landmark achievement in the band’s career.

“I’ve always related to songs like ‘Let The Waters Rise’ or ‘Someone Worth Dying For,’” says Grayson, who wrote or co-wrote every song on “All or Nothing.” “I’ve always wanted to be really honest in my writing and not shy away from the reality of the world and what it means to be here, but the prayer is that there’s glimmer of hope in all of these songs to help people lift their eyes up a little bit from where they are.”

In recording “All or Nothing,” MIKESCHAIR once again worked with producer Matt Bronleewe, whose writing and/or production credits include Jars of Clay, Plumb, Michael W. Smith and Natalie Imbruglia. “He’s amazing. This record is a fresh thing for MIKESCHAIR,” says Grayson. “On this record, there’s a lot of really fun songs. There’s a song called ‘Loved By You’ that is just rejoicing in the fact that we’re loved. ‘This Is Our Moment’ is this huge anthem song. I wrote it with Matt Bronleewe and Jason Walker. We wrote it while the Olympics were happening.”

Since the last album, Grayson has gotten married and entered a new chapter of his young life. “There’s a lot of songs on this record that reflect the season that I personally have been going through,” he says. “You can see that reflected in the writing.”

The sound of the record was also inspired by this sunny season in Grayson’s life. “We went a lot more organic on this record,” he relates. “There are more organic tones and instruments and yet there’s still the funky sounds that MIKESCHAIR has done in the past. This season has felt like a time to do something a little different. It’s my voice and people are going to hear MIKESCHAIR for sure, but it’s a little more poppy and fun.”

The lead single, “All I Can Do,” is a buoyant number that serves as a great introduction to the band’s third collection. The lyric was inspired by a small group study that Grayson and his wife Molly have been doing on the book “Crazy Love.” “The first chapter is all about prayer and the way we approach God and the way we think when we’re praying,” Grayson explains. “I got really convicted about the way that I pray because I realize that I’m literally like a kid most of the time when I pray because I’ll just jump right into ‘God this is what I want. This is what I need. This is what I feel you should be doing and you’re not.’ I don’t want my life to look ungrateful. I want my life to scream thankfulness and gratefulness because there’s so much that God has done. I have tendency to always look for the next thing coming up and I rarely rejoice in what God has done and what he has me in now. So this song reminds me I don’t want to pass up the opportunity to stop and say thank you. I want to be able to rest in what God has done and be faithful. I want to find the Lord in the moment. We’re not promised tomorrow so let’s find what God has for us in the now.”

Throughout the album, Grayson’s strong, vibrant voice continues to serve up songs that urge believers into a closer more satisfying relationship with their creator. “I Can Wait” reminds listeners of God’s faithfulness by assuring that God is always right on time. Matthew West makes a guest appearance on the intriguing “People Like Me.” The album closes with the powerful “All to Jesus.” “It’s like a modern take on ‘I Surrender All,’” Grayson says. “My prayer is by the end of the record, people will hear ‘All to Jesus’ and that literally be the cry of their heart—all to Jesus I surrender. That’s why I put it at the end in hopes of not closing the chapter, but in saying, ‘Okay I’ve gone through the journey, this is where I want to land and go on from there.’’

MIKESCHAIR has been on an incredible journey from college buddies who started a band to young men with a successful music ministry that has impacted people from eight to 80 with their thought-provoking songs. Along the way, they’ve experienced some interesting moments. They recorded their first Christmas project, which included original holiday tunes. The band saw their logo emblazoned on a NASCAR race car. Grayson received his first gold album when “Let the Waters Rise” was included on multi-artist WOW hits collection. The band toured with Big Daddy Weave, Matthew West and other acclaimed acts as well as headlining their own tour. They also traveled to Peru, Guatemala and Honduras doing mission work for Buckner International and Food for the Hungry.

"The DNA of the band has always been about bringing awareness to need,” says Grayson. “We are so blessed, and if I can take a couple minutes out of a show and talk to ears that will listen and give a voice to those who don’t have a voice, that’s a huge part of what we feel called to do as a band. That’s something that you’ll see from MIKESCHAIR for years to come.”

Creating uplifting music, serving others and giving their all to God are all in the DNA of MIKESCHAIR and as Grayson and his bandmates move forward with All or Nothing, they hope they’ve inspired others. “We want to effectively communicate the message we feel God has given us,” Grayson says of the band’s mission. “Ultimately, the goal is pointing to Jesus.’

Mark Schultz - Hymns 2014 biography and history

Biography ::

Listeners have come to expect inspiring and remarkable stories in songs from Mark Schultz, a 14-time Dove Award nominee and platinum-selling artist who touches hearts whether he sings about parents praying for a sick child (“He’s My Son”), or writes in honor of his great-grandmother’s sons who fought in World War II (“Letters From War”).

And with his latest effort, All Things Possible, Schultz continues to tackle matters of the heart and spirit with uncommon craftsmanship–though the past five years have impacted this artist in ways he could’ve never predicted or expected. He’s lived in Europe, started the Remember Me Mission with his wife to help orphans (Schultz himself is adopted), and became a father in 2012 to a boy, Ryan Samuel Schultz.

Produced by Seth Mosley (Newsboys) and Pete Kipley (MercyMe/Phil Wickham), All Things Possible has a joyous, infectious pop-rock feel that shows Schultz’ soulful tenor and tuneful melodies at their peak. Yet there’s added depth that comes as this compassionate storyteller dives deeper into using music as a vehicle for better things. Here, he quotes no less a source than theologian Frederick Buechner: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

“All Things Possible means something different than when I was first starting out as a musician,” Schultz says. “When I first got signed, I thought that if 10 people bought my record, that would be ‘all things possible.’ But today, using this platform for myself to sell more records is not as inspiring to me. I can only accomplish good things if God is in them, and God shows up. I want to pray those prayers.”

As Schultz describes it, the road to All Things Possible began, quite literally, on the road. In 2007, he dipped his toe in the Pacific Ocean and began a punishing 3,500-mile bike ride across the U.S. to raise money for orphans and widows via the James Fund.

Here’s how Schultz recalls that bipedal leap of faith that kicked off a 14-date concert tour: “We took off from the Pacific and I thought, ‘God is in this.’ Forty miles into it, I’m out of shape, but I’m thinking, ‘God is still into this.’ And then I got to the first mountain and I thought, ‘I’m not sure God is into this anymore!’”

But if his muscles ached and doubts nagged, Schultz got over it at his first stop, a church outside Palm Springs, Calif. There he played for only 400 people, a modest crowd by Mark Schultz standards. Yet unexpected inspiration carried him up a mountain of another sort.

“I did a set list I’d never done before; I told stories I’d never told before,” Schultz says. “The minister took an offering and afterwards he said, ‘I don’t know what you’re used to, but for his little church, it’s really good.’ They had raised more than $20,000.”

While Schultz has always been a powerful encourager through his music, experiences like that took him to new places he wanted to express through new songs. Yet the Colby, Kansas native crafted many compositions for All Things Possible the way he’s always done it–at a chapel piano in Nashville where he’s written since his pre-recording artist days as a youth group leader.

“It’s right around the corner from my house,” Schultz says. “I go to the little chapel where I’ve written almost every one of my songs, and I just repeat a line, and usually tears are running down my face. My best songs are written when I don’t plan them out.”

Take “Haven’t Even Met You Yet,” a driving slice of organ-and-piano fueled country rock Schultz crafted for his then-unborn son: “This is where your story starts/ You’ve already stolen my heart … I don’t remember life before you at all, and the funny thing is, I haven’t even met you yet.”

“I just get tears in my eyes thinking about him,” Schultz says of little Ryan Samuel–and with poignant reason. “I’ve never met my bloodline in this world; it’s not like I’ve got my biological mom or my dad. I remember my wife saying, ‘He looks just like you,’ and I looked in his eyes, and he smiled. My knees just buckled. He’s the first part of me that I’ve ever seen in someone else. I play that in concert and it gets a standing ovation. The thing that’s so exciting for me is that I can’t wait until he gets older, and he can sing his song for his kids.”

Yet other songs for “Possible” took flight across the Atlantic, as Schultz and his wife Kate, an OB-GYN, spent a yearlong sabbatical after she completed her medical residency. Take the snappy tune “I Gave Up,” the first one written for the album: “We’d been in Europe for a while; everything was slower and relationships are pretty prized, while stuff is not prized. And my wife looked at me and said, ‘Everything we own is in a garage in Nashville. So do you miss anything?’ I said, ‘No I don’t miss anything.’ And right there was a shift: We have to pay more attention to the relationships, the things that matter, and less to the things that are gong to crumble in time.”

When the tune came, Schultz wasted no time catching it, though it took some late-night finesse. “I jumped out of bed and soon I was on the street in Florence, out in the street singing into a recorder at 3 o’clock in the morning.”

Of course, it helps when you’re a songwriter abroad to find a piano, and Schultz (who couldn’t exactly ship one to Europe) found instruments in the most surprising places. “When we got to Florence I was climbing the walls. I had to find a piano somewhere. And Kate said, ‘Don’t worry if we pray about it, we’ll find one.’ So we were eating dinner and there was this very old church across the street, with frescos on the wall.”

Schultz went to investigate, and found out that the church not only had a piano, but also was holding a worship service for American college students the next day. The former youth leader stepped up; “I played one song, and then another, and one kid said, ‘Hey, you’re playing an awful lot of Mark Schultz songs.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I know.’” Schultz eventually became the church’s temporary worship leader, and grew attendance at the youth service from 5 kids to 30 by the time he left four months later.

Another unlikely surprise awaited Schultz in Italy: He found out that his wife qualified for Italian citizenship, since her great-grandfather was an Italian citizen. “So she got a dual citizenship in Italy, and because I’m married to her, I was able to get one, too. And my kid is an Italian citizen, and he didn’t do any work at all!”

Some kids, though, have a lifetime of struggle ahead. Ask Schultz to sum up the album’s theme in one song, and he points to “One Day,” which got its start while he was on stage singing his hit “I Am.” “I’m looking out in the audience and halfway back, I can see kids in wheelchairs. There’s this one kid in a wheelchair with his fists clenched and his arms thrown up in the air and tears running down his face. And I got choked up. Right at that moment I thought, ‘Kid you’re going to get your own song.’”

The refrain, in typical Schultz fashion, spotlights bigger possibilities and hope beyond human limitations. “One day we will touch the healer’s hand/ One day we will be whole again.”

“When I sing it, I think of the kid in the wheelchair, and how when he gets to heaven, he gets to kick that wheelchair to the ground and walk away from it,” Schultz says. “No matter what you’re going through—cancer, a disease, or being in a wheelchair—it’s powerful to think there’s an endgame to that.”
