History ::
Switchfoot is an American rock band from San Diego, California. The band's members are Jon Foreman (lead vocals, guitar), Tim Foreman (bass guitar, backing vocals), Chad Butler (drums, percussion), Jerome Fontamillas (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Drew Shirley (guitar, backing vocals).

After early successes in the Christian rock scene, Switchfoot first gained mainstream recognition with the inclusion of four of their songs in the 2002 movie A Walk to Remember. This recognition led to their major label debut, The Beautiful Letdown, which was released in 2003. It went on to sell over 2.6 million copies. They have since been noted for their energetic live shows, and their seventh studio album Hello Hurricane received a Grammy award in 2011 for Best Rock Gospel Album.

According to Jon Foreman, the name "Switchfoot" is a surfing term. "We all love to surf and have been surfing all our lives so to us, the name made sense. To switch your feet means to take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It's about change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music.

Switchfoot was founded in 1996 as Chin Up, consisting of Jon Foreman and his brother Tim, along with Chad Butler on drums. After playing only a few shows, the band was contacted by music industry veteran Charlie Peacock and eventually signed to his indie label Re:think Records under the current moniker, Switchfoot. Re:think went on to distribute the first three Switchfoot albums, The Legend of Chin, New Way to Be Human, and Learning to Breathe. Because Re:think was bought out by Christian giant Sparrow Records before Switchfoot's first release, however, the band's and Peacock's intentions of being marketed outside of the Contemporary Christian music scene and reaching a wider audience were put on hold. Consequently, the band was mostly marketed exclusively to Christian radio and retail outlets early in their careers, a time Jon Foreman has described as when "half of who we were was lost."

Of Switchfoot's first three albums, Learning to Breathe was the most successful, being certified gold by the RIAA, and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album.

Later on in 2002, Switchfoot's music was featured prominently in the movie A Walk to Remember, starring singer and actress Mandy Moore, who sang Switchfoot's song "Only Hope" during a scene in the movie. In addition to Moore's cover of "Only Hope", Switchfoot’s songs “You”, “Learning to Breathe”, and “Dare You to Move” were showcased in the film, as well as their own original version of "Only Hope" towards the end of the film.

Switchfoot has finished working on their next studio project, titled Vice Verses. According to Butler, the core of the record will rest thematically in the idea of the polarity of life. A release date of September 27, 2011 was announced on All Access, with "Dark Horses" hitting modern rock radio on July 20.

Gungor - Ghosts Upon The Earth 2011 biography and historyGungor - Ghosts Upon The Earth 2011 biography and history
History ::
The best things in life are often hard to describe. But because it is mankind’s natural instinct to understand the world, there is an attempt to box things into categories. Even the most complex feelings and emotions are neatly organized with made-up labels that over simplify the most beautiful complexities of existence. Music is no different. Genre titles such as “Pop”, “Folk” and “Alternative” are meant to give a listener an idea of what to expect and how to group music together. But, for the musical collective, Gungor it is not that simple.

It’s not so much an attempt to directly defy the rules of modern music making as much as it’s simply the honest musical response of the Denver based group that sees the world as a beautifully complicated place. Multiple Grammy ® nominations, magazine covers and even a few “Album of the Year” declarations for 2010’s Beautiful Things, proves that listeners are longing for excellent and authentic music, whether it fits the norm or not.

For their third major release, Gungor has composed a concept album that celebrates the beauty of life even in the midst of darkness and pain. Starting with a startling musical imagining of the creation of the universe and traversing subjects like the “fall of man” and the imperfection of our religious systems, this album leads the listener through a roller coaster of emotion that eventually leads us back to wonder and thankfulness to this beautiful gift of life.

This is a group that believes listeners are intelligent enough to appreciate lyrical metaphor and allegory along with intricate time signatures and somewhat uncommonly paired instruments in pop or rock music. Ghosts Upon the Earth paints a hauntingly beautiful soundscape that emotionally conveys both the intricacy and wonder of the universe that we live in as well as the tension and dissonance that we all experience. From sweeping string lines and soaring, falsetto vocal melodies to distorted flute riffs and five part dissonant harmonies, this album explores quite a wide emotional and musical gamut.

And according to Michael Gungor, the namesake, producer, and leader of the collective, it’s all very purposeful and full of subtle meaning. From fast violin arpeggios that represent vibrating “strings” in a primordial universe, to the sacred sound of the first heartbeats that Michael and his wife Lisa ever heard of their baby girl reminding us of the fragility and preciousness of life, nothing is haphazard about this album.

Also featured more prominently on this record than the last one is Michael’s wife, Lisa, a gifted musician and songwriter in her own right. Most of the songs on the album are written by Michael and Lisa together, and there are several songs that feature her as the primary vocalist. Her voice is used as an instrument in itself, in an album that includes credits for things like a six-person string section, horns, glockenspiels, banjos, and a boys choir.

The title, Ghosts Upon the Earth was somewhat inspired by the allegory by C.S. Lewis titled The Great Divorce, in which the “ghosts” of a grey town encounter a heaven that is astonishingly, even painfully, real. “Sometimes it seems like the most real thing is what we can see and experience with our senses around us- this life, the tangible,” explains Michael Gungor. “Ideas like love, like God, these things sometimes feel more disconnected and ethereal, like that’s the ghostly realm. But what if that’s wrong, and God and love is actually what is most real, and we are more like ghosts walking upon the earth, hoping to become more real?”

Gungor’s work on this new album follows a season of touring that was far removed from a typical concert or worship service. Composed into three movements, these “Beautiful Things Events” explored the intersecting of ideas like art and spirituality, faith and doubt, hope and social action, in ways that really resonated with concert goers, both in religious and mainstream settings. “I purposefully didn’t talk much or try to get people to do anything along with us,” Michael recalls. “But somehow in that lack of pressure, we started having these deeply spiritual moments in the room together, and by the end of the night, people might be crying or dancing or maybe just sitting there in silence, but there was something real happening among us.”

To Michael, this new album is a step farther down that path. “I feel like we’re a bit more comfortable with who we are at this point, and it’s been nice that there seems to be this little niche that we’ve found where people are excited to explore these things with us. Music doesn’t have to fit the mold to move people’s hearts, and at the end of the day, that’s really what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to make honest music that opens people’s hearts.”

History ::
We were born and raised in the southern hemisphere, the land down-under... Australia. And in case you can't tell, we are brothers.

Since before we can remember, music has been our life's natural backdrop and soundtrack. Our Father was a music promoter turned entertainment manager which gave us a first hand introduction to a very eclectic mix of music and live shows.

In the early 90's we moved to... the USA after our Dad was offered a job in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then, we have traveled the world (together as well as separately) singing, performing and running various aspects of artists' live shows.

It was out of experiences like these we began working on music together. We have spent the last several years writing and developing what we call our, 'International-Pop-Rock' sound.

Music has the peculiar ability to connect with the soul, and we want to use it to encourage... Life is a journey; full of highs and lows; triumphs and sorrows; these are the subjects we write about: Real human experiences. Whether that means sharing about honest struggles, asking unanswered questions, or talking about relationships, our hope is this music will inspire you and each song will relate to you, right where you are.

Matt Maher - The Love In Between 2011 Biography and HistoryMatt Maher - The Love In Between 2011 Biography and History
History ::
Great music hinges on compelling writing, honest delivery, a refined, unique musical identity. Great leadership hinges on openness, compassion, devotion. Singer-songwriter and worship leader Matt Maher has built his career – his life – on striving to embody those ideals.

Matt Maher the songwriter cemented his respected reputation penning songs with Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith, Matt Redman, Passion (“Here For You”), Audrey Assad and Jars of Clay.

The heart of Matt Maher the worship leader has shown through clearly over years spent teaching, sharing and praying all over the world, including appearances at the Papal Rally in NYC, World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, and extensive touring over the past 5 years, with the likes of Michael W. Smith, Leeland, Phil Wickham, Jars of Clay, Third Day, Tenth Avenue North and Mercy Me, bringing him in front of more than three million people.

With the September 20 release of The Love in Between, Matt Maher the artist -- fully defined, fully formed -- steps fully into the foreground.

His third national release on Essential Records shows Maher finding his voice both sonically and lyrically, the rootsy pop aesthetic he introduced on 2010 hit “Hold Us Together” (from 2009’s Alive Again) flowing into a 12-song study of suffering, grace, redemption and hope.

Those ideas coalesce particularly in “Heaven and Earth,” The Love in Between track that inspired the album’s title.

The song contemplates “the distance between us and our humanity and God and his divinity,” Maher says. “There is only one thing that bridges that gap and essentially annihilates it, and that is Jesus. He is the love in between sin and freedom, death and life and hopelessness and hope.”

Maher’s focus grows out of that idea, centering less on distance and more on the bridging of it. The leadoff single “Turn Around,” which debuted at No. 28 on the NAC chart a week ahead of its add date, explores the ways in which Jesus embodied that broad embrace, anchored by the refrain, “If you’re lost and need to be found/ If you’re looking for a savior/ All you gotta do is turn around.”

“If you look back over history, specifically around the time Jesus was physically here in the flesh, humanity has struggled with pride, resulting in a subculture that, while having the best of intentions, ends up marginalizing the people who are most in need of God,” Maher says. “However, Jesus came offering a message of repentance for all who would be willing to receive it. Those on the outside and on the inside of the Church.”

The six-time GMA Dove Award nominee also recognizes that he’s a living example of the value in shedding boundaries, be they perceived or physical. Raised Catholic in Newfoundland, Canada, he was inspired to pen “Woke Up In America,” a personal and patriotic anthem on The Love in Between.

Maher shares, “The song is really about the story of the individual as an allegory for the story of a nation and its struggle to find freedom and identity.”

The Love in Between’s release comes during a time of many big new developments for Maher. The new husband and his wife Kristin welcomed their first son, Conor, in early August; in early September, he’ll launch the first in a series of headlining tours hosted by his newly formed organization Comm+Unity, which will support multiple local, national and international non-profit efforts.

Maher headlines the first jaunt, which kicks off in Texas and runs through to the West Coast (including a Gilbert, Ariz., album release show on September 20), with support from one sonic society (Jason Ingram, Stu G., Paul Mabury) and Integrity artist All Sons & Daughters (David Leonard, Leslie Jordan).

Throughout October, he’ll headline the newly launched, month-long, “Compassion International Presents: The Love In Between Tour,” a partnership with Compassion International and Christian radio featuring Laura Story and Essential Records newcomer Andy Cherry. To close out the year, Maher will join Mercy Me on the “Rock & Worship Road Show” before spending the Christmas and New Years holidays with his family in Arizona.

Not any of this has happened overnight. It’s taken four years of non-stop touring and several more focused on writing and recording, to yield four Top 200 CCLI songs over six years and more than 275,000 in sales of his independent and Essential Records titles to reach the clarity Maher has funneled into The Love in Between.

Mike Snider of Paradigm Talent Agency figures that’s built Maher not just into a marquee name, but one with staying power. He notes, “In addition to his sales and songwriting placements, Matt has stepped to the plate as a hard-ticket-selling, headlining artist, who is going to help shape and re-define touring as we know it.”

Matt Kees, Director of the Christian Musician Summit, concurs. “Matt Maher is a great fit for us at the Christian Musician Summit – he has the ability to reach people on a variety of levels at our conferences and we’re excited to see how he’s made the steady climb into an impactful and enduring artist who people want to see. Not only is Matt a well-trained and accomplished keyboardist and guitarist, he is a top-notch songwriter, and a well respected lead worshiper with years and years of ministry experience. Matt can teach, perform and relate to Christian musicians and fans.”

Maher, always ready to share the music and the Gospel offers, “At the end of the day, I’m just thankful to be in a place where I get to share the music I was inspired to write. It’s been a great road and I’m looking forward to sharing the songs from The Love In Between with friends and fans everywhere.”

Leeland - The Great Awakening 2011 Biography and HistoryLeeland - The Great Awakening 2011 Biography and History
History ::
GRAMMY-nominated progressive rock act Leeland has been known to deliver songwriting beyond its years and worshipful rock so genuine it disarms the honest cynic. Often quoted as one of Christian music’s most gripping live bands, the 2006 debut Sound of Melodies and 2008’s Opposite Way quickly established Leeland as a leader in the worship community and beyond. While both previous albums were GRAMMY... nominated and drew a combined eight Dove nominations, Leeland’s measure of success has always been the human heart. And now Leeland’s third album, Love Is On The Move is a landmark in the deepest sense.

“During the past year, God has caused a total shift in our thinking and the way we approach our ministry,” says Leeland keyboardist Jack Mooring. His brother, the band’s principal songwriter, lead singer and guitarist, Leeland Mooring begins to explain, “For awhile, we were just this band from Baytown, Texas, and all we saw was our little church where God had been doing awesome and incredible things. But He’s really been opening our vision to all the hurting people, especially the poor, around the world and making it clear we should help by being a part of spreading His kingdom.” Leeland goes on to quote from 1 John 3:18, “Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions... [NIV],” and he profoundly states: “If we’re not loving people, then we’re just making a bunch of noise.” That’s quite a statement coming from a leader who’s influencing a new generation of worshipers. And that’s precisely the point. “We don’t want to sing another song if we’re not taking care of the poor. If we’re not being the hands and feet of Jesus, we might as well just stop making records and go home,” says Jack.

This very idea is the heart behind Leeland’s new project. With passion and conviction Leeland has transformed its sound into a call to action; asking followers of Christ to be the hands and feet of God.

“Worship, justice and action are not separate,” explains 21-year-old Leeland. “They are united. They work together. When you have an amazing encounter with God and you experience His love during worship, the fruit of that should be your life overflowing with action and love – justice – to the world around you. ... That’s why Jesus said [in Matthew 25] on the Day of Judgment people will say, ‘God, when did I ever see you naked, or hungry, or thirsty or in jail?’ And He’ll say, ‘Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me,” and to others God will say, “Whatever you did not do for the least of these, you did not do for Me.'”

The shift in Leeland’s mission has been moving in this direction since the group’s formation in 2004 with “Tears of the Saints,” the socially conscious single off Leeland’s debut, Sound of Melodies. The band’s quest for insight continued as they befriended renowned teenage abolitionist Zach Hunter, toured with activist-rockers Third Day, collaborated with social justice advocate Michael W. Smith (Leeland, a prolific songwriter, had writing credits on seven songs on Smith’s 2006 album Stand.), partnered with Christian relief organization Food for the Hungry, took outreach trips to Africa and Asia, and attended Hillsong Church’s 2008 Conference in Australia.

The Hillsong experience set the tone for the worshipful anthems and prayers which elevate Love Is On The Move. “One of the speakers at the conference spoke about worship and justice,” Leeland recalls. “After his message, he played a clip of Bono giving an acceptance speech for an award he received for the work he’s been doing with Africa. And Bono actually started preaching and saying, ‘God is with the poor and with the needy, and if we want to be with God, we need to follow Him to the poor--where the poor play house inside of cardboard boxes.'’ He just went off. It was very anointed and it ministered to me a lot.”

Leeland immediately exited the room and began writing song lyrics. “I ran out to the hallway with this melody in my head,” he says. “The whole chorus came right away.” And thus “Follow You,” a heart-felt pledge was born. By the time the song made it into the recording studio, it was clear to everyone involved “Follow You” was a song that was sure to move people to action.

Soon Leeland extended an invitation to its good friend Brandon Heath, GMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year, to appear as a special guest on the inspiring psalm. When Heath sings, “All my needs You have supplied / When I was dead You gave me life / How could I not give it away so freely / I'll follow You into the homes of the broken,” the conviction is so clear. “We’re on the same page with each other,” explains Jack. “Brandon’s heart, like ours, is focused on being about action.”

To helm production for Love Is On The Move, Leeland – which also features the Mooring’s cousin Jake Holtz (bass) and long-time friend Mike Smith (drums) – turned to award-winning veteran Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, David Crowder Band) and their friend Steve Wilson (Fish, Hawk Nelson) who had co-written three songs on Leeland’s debut, including the title cut “Sound of Melodies.” Cash, who produced the bulk of the new tracks and co-wrote several with Leeland and Jack, was very impressed with Leeland’s recording process. “It was so apparent from day one that God was the star and the focus,” he says. “Unlike any record I’ve ever made, we started most every day with about an hour of unplanned prayer and worship, just getting caught up into the presence of God. And I’m certain that is reflected in the music. I knew that Leeland was extremely talented, but now I understand why they have such a powerful dedication to the service of God – they are sold out for Jesus – He is first far and above all else in their lives.”

Wilson, meanwhile, witnessed the creative spontaneity spurred by the band’s faith when the producer hosted them for a songwriting session. On the way to that meeting, Leeland and Jack had pulled over to help a homeless man when they noticed him asking for money. Jack recalls how that encounter redirected the songwriting session. “We’d been working on a faster [tempo] idea, when all of a sudden, Leeland went up to the piano and just started playing a slow beautiful melody. We started thinking about that homeless man and began writing. Over the next 30 minutes, God just really gave us our title song, “Love Is On the Move.”

As they wrote, the band saw its entire mission statement poetically unfold before their eyes. A poignant response to both physical and spiritual poverty, “Love Is On The Move” best represents the album’s overall theme. Jack explains, “We see our calling as a band as two-fold: reaching out to the poor and reaching the ‘up-and-outers.’ America’s a rich nation, but we’re spiritually poor. We want to see God bring a personal revival in the hearts of Americans and transform our nation.”

Leeland explains that revival is so much more than feeling goose bumps. It changes your character, mind set and the way you act toward others. “You start caring way more about the poor than you do yourself,” he says. “You start caring way more about hurting people. You become more courageous and bold for Jesus. Dreams that you thought were dead start rising up in your heart. You begin to believe again that you can do these things for the Kingdom of God. And not only do you start believing, you act on those dreams. That’s revival. That’s love on the move.”

Remarkable vision calls for a remarkable album, and that’s what you get with Love Is On The Move. Leeland takes you to that rare place where innocence and fervor meet depth of soul. And like the bands that inform Leeland’s work – Coldplay, Travis, Tree63, U2 and Delirious among them – the Texans’ brand of Britpop is both emotive and layered. Consider the album’s opening track, “The Door.” With soaring guitars on one end and textured counterparts on the other, the rockalong is a joyful and determined celebration of The Way, The Truth and The Life. Later, Leeland’s empathetic vocals, a climactic rhythm section, and majestic strings seize the day as “Via Dolorosa” contemplates the road of suffering that Jesus walked to the cross. For the prophetic “Pure Bride,” the versatile grace of Leeland’s voice is on ethereal display over alluring synth treatments and flitting percussion, while piano and vocals lead the way on the prayerful ballad “Holy Spirit Have Your Way.”

Leeland takes its new music and action call on tour this fall as it reunites with Brandon Heath (and welcomes special guest Francesca Battistelli) to co-headline the “Follow You Tour.” The artists will give audiences the chance to respond to each night’s worship with immediate action as they strongly recommend child sponsorships through Food for the Hungry.

When Leeland’s not on the road, band members continue to lead worship at the Baytown, Texas church the Mooring’s parents began pastoring six years ago. The band also serves regularly in their community’s Gulf Coast emergency preparedness programs and at a local food pantry which feeds hundreds of people each week. Earlier this year, Leeland and Jack were also the only musicians invited to the White House for its “Compassion in Action Roundtable” which targeted emerging leaders in developing the next generation of America’s social entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders. The way the band sees it, love should be on the move locally and globally. After all, doesn’t God choose to expand his Kingdom and His love by reaching out to the world through the lives and actions of His followers? Perhaps Leeland sums it up best, “Jesus was the first to be love on the move when He went to the cross. But when He did that, he transferred that love to us so we become His love on the move.”

Cory Lamb - Break The Cycle 2011 Biography and historyCory Lamb - Break The Cycle 2011 Biography and history
Intoxicating lyrics with a powerful beat is what you think of when you hear Cory Lamb’s music. The music is contemporary rock with a production sophistication rarely found from today’s emerging artists.

Cory is not only a lead singer but a songwriter. Cory’s music is personal and relatable, telling life stories that brings back memories for virtually anyone who listens: there is a reason for that – many of the songs are about his own life, for that matter everyone’s life. “Tell Me That It’s Over” which Cory co-wrote talks about a relationship he was in but wasn’t sure where he stood with his girlfriend, and “Kate” another song he co-wrote, is a song about the perfect girl.

Growing up in a tight knit family in Arkansas helped form the basis for his music and sound. Cory can’t remember when he wasn’t singing and has always known that he wanted to be a musician. Like most musicians and singers, Cory performed for his family in their home until he joined a band at age 16. He was the lead singer of a band named “About Last Night,” and co-writer for some of their songs.

After high school graduation, Cory moved to LA to work with John Guess, a music engineer with years of experience and Grammys under his belt for his work with the Dixie Chicks. John has also worked with Rod Stewart, Donna Summer, Reba McEntire and many others. Cory applied for a studio internship with John, but instead of an internship, Guess sign on to produce Cory’s album. Cory was on the fast track to his dream.

After his first album, of which many songs were written without his input, he decided to put a band together thus beginning the development of his own sound. Cory’s Musical Director and Guitarist Alex Knoll and Co-Guitarist Tak Tanaka created the foot for the band that would later include Devin Lebsack (Drums) and Dylan Wilson (Bass). After meeting Andy Duncan, Cory knew Andy should produce the album and the production team was established. The songs are as complex as they are amazingly entertaining. The chemistry between Cory and the band is remarkable, both on-stage and in the music. Two years of working in LA and fine-tuning his music, playing local clubs in Southern California and opening for Ryan Cabrera, Cory has decided to base his music in Arkansas. Cory explains that some of his best songs were written based on his experiences in Arkansas and he wants to stay connected to the community. After being on the road for so long it feels good to “come home.”

Cory’s musical style has been established and his musical team is in place. In combination with Alex Knoll and Devin Lebsack, the band delivers a high impact sound and incredible energy required by Cory for his stage performance. Cory’s work ethic is evident in all aspects of his music and he works to perform his best show every time he steps on stage.

We Are Leo - Hello 2011 history and biography
History ::
The Chicago-area based pop/rock quartet has developed their distinct brand of energetic, message-based music over the course of three years of touring, earning them a legion of loyal, grass-roots fans while playing with the likes of Skillet, Family Force 5 and House of Heroes. Armed with warm smiles and genuine down-to-earth attitudes, We Are Leo are seasoned, energetic performers. They have won several “Battle of the Bands’” and have been hand selected to play NACA showcases, theme park shows and festivals such as Lifest, Big Ticket and Purple Door. Their debut record, Hello, a varied and rich collection of culturally relevant pop and rock songs, was produced and co-written by Ben Kasica of Skillet. Hello is releasing under Kasica’s label, Skies Fall Records, and comes highly anticipated by their avid, young fan-base. Ben says, “I became a fan of We Are Leo from the first time I heard them. David has a way of writing lyrics with a strong and relevant message that only a few writers have done before. I’m personally moved and blessed by their songs, so it was an honor to work on their record. With the heart and message of a young Jon Foreman and the hooks of a Top 40 artist, We are Leo is well on their way toward musical greatness.” We Are Leo frontman, David Duffield, says, "What we are aspiring to do is write and sing songs that will express a real sense of God's love to young hearts and minds… songs that will become anthems of faith, hope and new life. I want to make music that grabs people’s attention; that is relevant to them musically and spiritually." He goes on to say, “Our band name, We Are Leo, is about our desire to be bold and courageous like a lion (leo being the Greek word for Lion), and also that we might shine like stars in the darkness, like the constellation Leo does.” Hailing originally from the plains east of Denver, Colorado, David, who also helms the keyboards and his younger brother/drummer Jonny Duffield started the band to express the songs they were writing from experiences gained while traveling around the world with Teen Mania Missions, Acquire the Fire Youth Events and cultivating a heart for worship at The Living Light School of Worship. Adding guitarist Doug Weier from Chicago and Detroit-raised bassist Andrew Alojipan, We Are Leo has developed into a full-force rock band with a mission. They remarked: "When we are on the road, we sense that we aren't merely touring America, we are fighting for love, for hope and for new beginnings." With Hello, We Are Leo brings that fight to the front lines. The lead single, “Live For Love,” is a summer jam and dance-pop declaration of our mandate to love one another, while the rock anthem “Oxygen” and futuristic tune “I’m With You” remind us of our utter need for God and His promise to always be with us. Other highlights include “Seventeen,” a reminder of our need for a fresh start, and the pop anthem “Colors,” which celebrates our hope and identity in Christ. With enough fun and rock ‘n roll to keep the kids dancing and depth and relevance of message and musicality to satisfy the adult in all of us, We Are Leo is poised to impact the young and mature alike as they encourage all of us to ‘Live For Love’. Hello indeed.

Mercy Me - The Worship Sessions 2011 history and biographyMercy Me - The Worship Sessions 2011 history and biography
History ::
For the men of MercyMe—Barry Graul (guitar), Robby Shaffer (drums), Mike Scheuchzer (guitar), Nathan Cochran (bass), Jim Bryson (keys) and Bart Millard (vocals)—worshipping the Lord and leading others in His praise is very much a life-long calling. That commitment has guided the band through the creation of six independent projects and 6 albums as one of the flagship artists of INO Records.

Mercy...Me’s beginnings can be traced back to Bart Millard’s football-hungry hometown Greenville, Texas. “My dad and my older brother were both football players,” Bart recalls, “so naturally, that’s what I wanted to do as well. But I broke both my ankles in a high school football game and that ended my career. Our football practices took place during the school day—sort of a substitute for Phys. Ed. So since I couldn’t dress out for practice, I had to move into another elective class, and choir was the only thing open at that point in the semester. I reluctantly joined the choir and as it turned out, I had a great choir teacher and also had a very encouraging music minister at my church, who both prodded me to get more involved, do solos and so forth.”

During his freshman year of high school, Bart’s father had contracted cancer, which five years later claimed his life during the first semester of Bart’s college career. “I felt like I needed to get away, start fresh,” remembers Bart. “My youth pastor had moved to Lakeland, Florida and asked me if I’d be interested in coming down there and working with his praise band. I moved there at the end of my first year of college. That was the first time I ever did anything with a band—just a local youth group who played for a Wednesday night service. But I fell in love with it immediately.”

After becoming friends through a series of weekend youth conventions, Jim and Bart were picked to head a worship team that traveled to Europe in the summer of 1994. Their praise team was so well received that the duo began sensing the Lord leading them into full time musical ministry. Mike came on board in August 1994, and the three relocated to Jim’s hometown of Oklahoma City becoming MercyMe.

In just a year’s time, MercyMe was attracting the attention of local promoters. An opening stint for an Audio Adrenaline concert led to the band forging a friendship with AA manager Scott Brickell, now also filling that role for MercyMe. Bart says that at Brickell’s encouragement, the band made its next major move—to Nashville. “It took almost a year to get a showcase arranged,” recalls Bart. “When we finally did, we played at a little church for some label representatives and a few hundred kids. We basically played all the songs on our one little album. The kids demanded an encore and since we had been playing praise and worship songs for these youth conventions and camps, we went back and began to worship. As we left the stage a second time with all of them still singing the choruses, I think that was the very first time the band realized how important praise and worship was to us.”

At the invitation of an evangelist friend in Dallas, MercyMe again moved, this time to Texas. Quickly, the band found itself playing as many as 200 dates in a year, with their musical focus on praise and worship with a modern rock/pop flair. “I could see a difference immediately after that showcase,” affirms Bart. “We had always thought ‘you do a showcase, you sign a deal, you make records for the ccm market.’ God made it clear the role MercyMe was to play was to help meet the growing hunger for praise and worship music.”

Nathan, Robby and Barry have also been a vital part of the mission of MercyMe. “I think these are a tremendously talented group of guys,” Bart enthuses, “but from the beginning, we’ve always said we know there are lots of talented musicians out there. But spiritually, it would be hard for me to find more godly men. I really believe all of us have been called to be worship leaders. Each of us has a unique gift that kids relate to in different ways.”

Bart says that having enjoyed success as an independent act, it took an astonishing set of circumstances to convince MercyMe it needed to sign a major label deal. “We were literally fulfilling all the roles an artist usually hires out—management, booking, marketing. We finally realized that we had played for nearly 200,000 people during 1999 and were selling albums at the same pace as many nationally known artists. Administratively, we were in over our heads to the point where we couldn’t have CDs printed as fast as we were selling them. We knew we needed help in fulfilling what God had called MercyMe to do.” So MercyMe began charting its future course with INO Records and Brickhouse Entertainment.

Now with 6 albums and over 13 years after their founding, the guys of MercyMe still find themselves passionate about leading people in worship and hope that their music will continue to direct people to Christ.
